Hey Bookbinders!
This month I’m sharing a new way to make your covers - using this historical binding from Germany. Unlike a case binding the cover boards and spine are separate sections that are glued together. It allows for the spine to be more flexible and lay flat. Oh how we love a lay flat binding!
Here are some examples from a set of books I made a while ago (now sold).

The trick is to press your cover and spine before you fold in the edges as it can move about. It takes a bit longer than making a case binding cover, but I think it looks really smart and you can fun with colour blocking too.
If you’re new to this group, I post a bookbinding tutorial every month and share my practice as a bookbinder and paper artist from my bricks and mortar shop Hanji in Northumberland. All tutorials are available if you’re in the paid tier and can be found here. It’s the most affordable way to learn everything about bookbinding amongst a group of makers, artists and fellow bookbinders! I hope you can join us.
